Aethelred II Penny, CRVX type, Cricklade, Wulfstan

Aethelred II (978-1016), silver Penny, CRVX type (c.991-997), Cricklade Mint, Moneyer Wulfstan, draped bust left with sceptre, linear circle and legend surrounding, +ÆÐELRED REX ANGLORX, the NG and ORX ligatured, rev. voided cross within linear circle, CRVX letters in consecutive angles, +PVLFSTAN M-O CROH, weight 1.64g (N.770; S.1148). With a few peck marks on both sides, otherwise toned, a bold very fine and an extremely rare Mint.

The Latin legends translate as "Aethelred King of the English" on obverse and "Wulfstan of Cricklade" on the reverse, the letters around the central cross mean "cross."

The Cricklade Mint perhaps known as "Creccelad" at this time was located in Wiltshire on the River Thames where there was a Saxon fortress to guard the river crossing. This perhaps explains why there are ten moneyers recorded at this mint starting in the reign of Aethelred, and running until the time of William II circa 1095, a period of just over 100 years. Wulfstan seems to be one of the rarer Moneyer names at this Mint.
