Aethelred II last small cross Penny Bath mint
Aethelred II (978-1016), silver Penny, last small cross type (c.1009-17), Bath Mint, Moneyer Hyldsige, diademed and draped bust left within linear circle, Latin legend surrounding, +ÆÐELRED REX AN, rev. small cross pattee at centre, linear circle with legend surrounding, +HYLÐSIGE ON BA, weight 1.68g (N.777; S.1154). Dark tone from the Thames mud, well defined with an attractive portrait, good very fine.
The legends translate as "Aethelred, King of the English" and "Hyldsige of Bath."
