17th Century Token, Southwark, The Mint, John Platten, Halfpenny, three line inscription at centre, HIS / HALF / PENY, beaded circles and legend surrounding, IOHN. PLATTEN. IN. THE., rev. Coopers arms, beaded circles and legend surrounding, cinquefoil at top, MINT. IN. SOVTHWARK, weight 1.90g (Boyne 248; BW 314). Light green patina both sides, almost very fine and rare.

John Platten the cooper would have been making his barrels in the area that used to be occupied by the old Tudor Southwark Mint that struck coinage for Henry VIII and Edward VI under Sir John Yorke at the old Suffolk Place. The area where this would be now is to the west of Borough High Street where Marshalsea Road is located.
