17th Century Token, Southwark, The Mint, John Bell, Halfpenny, 1669, three bells, beaded circles and legend surrounding, pierced sexfoil at top both sides, *IOHN. BELL. IN. THE. MINT, pellet stops, rev. three line inscription, HIS / HALF / PENY, three cinquefoil stops below, beaded circles and legend surrounding, cinquefoil stops, IN* SOVTHWARK* 1669, weight 1.69g (Boyne 245; BW 311). Creased and undulating, a bold fine.

John Bell of the Three bells would have been selling his ale in the area that used to be occupied by the old Tudor Southwark Mint that struck coinage for Henry VIII and Edward VI under Sir John Yorke at the old Suffolk Place. The area where this would be now is to the west of Borough High Street where Marshalsea Road is located.
