17th Century Token, London, Cateaton Street, Thomas Lacy and Roxcel Lana, Halfpenny, undated, ROXCEL LANA. around central female bust within beaded circle, legend surrounding, cinquefoil at top both sides, *THO. LACY. HIS. ½. PENY., rev. L over T.M, beaded circles and legend surrounding, *IN. CATTEATEN. STREETE., weight 1.62g (Boyne 389; BW 485) Toned, some porosity, almost fine.

Cateaton Street was redeveloped in what is today the Gresham Street area of the City and originally ran from the north end of Ironmonger's Lane to the west end of St Lawrence Church. This interesting token with the tiny feminine bust with ROXCEL LANA around the upper part may well refer to the actress Elizabeth Davenport also known as Roxcelana from her success in the opera "The Siege of Rhodes" by Sir William Davenant. This opera is considered the first to ever be performed publicly in England at Rutland House in 1656. She is mentioned by diarists Sir John Evelyn (9th January 1661/2), Samuel Pepys and in the "Memoires de Grammont".
