William and Mary 1690 silver Fourpence
William and Mary (1689-1694), silver Fourpence, 1690, retrograde Arabic 1 in date, the 6 in date with vertical die flaw resembling a 5, conjoined first busts right, reads GVLIELMVS. ET. MARIA. D.G., rev. crowned mark of value, legend surrounds MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. REX. ET. REGINA, weight 1.88g (Seaman 97 dies 13+N; Bull.885; ESC.1869a; Robinson 98; S.3439). Toned with reflective fields, some haymarking, practically very fine, rare.
The Latin legends translate to on obverse "William and Mary by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King and Queen of Great Britain, France and Ireland.
We note the Spink lists this variety as 6 over 5, but there is no definite definable figure under the 6 and it seems to be a die flaw. It also makes no sense for a 5 punch to be ever used for the reign of William and Mary or be therefore available to have punched in by mistake. This coin is nevertheless the variety Spink list as 6 over 5.
The 1690 Fourpence, Threepence and penny are the only small silver coins of this date with no maundy set available.
