Victoria (1837-1901), silver Double-Florin of Four Shillings, 1889, variety with inverted figure 1 for letter I in Queen's name, crowned and veiled Jubilee type bust left, J.E.B. on truncation for engraver Joseph Edgar Boehm, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding both sides, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, inverted 1 for second I, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, BRITT: REG: FID: DEF: weight 22.57g (Bull 2702 R2; Davies 545; ESC 398A R2; S.3923). Some short hairline scratches, wear from circulation and once cleaned, a bold fine and rare.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "Victoria by the Grace of God," and on the reverse as "Queen of the Briton's, Defender of the Faith."
This obverse die with what is probably a blocked serif of a regular I giving impression of an inverted 1 also occurs for the date 1888 and is a sought after rarity in this short series.
