Anglo-Saxon, Plegmund silver Penny

Archbishops of Canterbury, Plegmund (890-914), silver Penny, Canterbury mint, moneyer Berhrthelm, Group II, small cross pattée, circles and legend surrounding, + PLEGMVND ΛRCHIEP, rev. three crosses pattée across centre, moneyer name in two lines, BERHT/ELM MO trefoil of pellets above and below, 1.48 g, (N.256; S.900 plate coin). Toned, trace of red deposit on obverse, nearly extremely fine, very rare with an excellent provenance.

The legends translate on obverse as "Plegmund Archbishop" and reverse "Berthelm Moneyer".

Plegmund was appointed by King Alfred the Great (871-899) as Archbishop of Canterbury in 890. He proved to be very influential in the reigns of both Alfred and King Edward the Elder (899-924) and was involved in the early effort to convert the Danelaw to Christianity.
