Prince Albert (1819-61), medallet struck in silvered brass in memoriam, c.1862, by Daniel Ulhorn, bust of the late Prince Albert left, legend and beaded border surrounding, HIS LATE R. H. THE PRINCE CONSORT ALBERT, rev. three pierced mullets in top curving line followed by six line inscription in raised letters, D. ULHORN / COINING- / PRESS MAKER division line GREVENBROICH / RHENISH - / PRUSSIA, last word in a curve, all surrounded by raised rim and beaded border, edge plain, diameter 21mm, weight 4.43g (BHM 2755/- ). Some black uneven patches of tone, light hairlines, extremely fine.

Daniel Ulhorn was responsible for a significant pattern crown in the British series of George IV dated 1828 having invented an improved coining press which was first used at the Berlin Mint from 1820 and that was adopted at the Royal Mint from 1828. The invention was quite different from the other presses in use which were from Matthew Boulton. Instead of a heavy hammer blow to strike coins, a flywheel operated toggle jointed lever applied great pressure onto an upper die literally squeezing new coins out of the dies. Though the output rate of Ulhorn's machine was greater than Boulton's, the heavy pressure hammer blows of Boulton's presses gave a more durable harder surface to the resulting coins meaning the earlier machines continued in use over Ulhorn's.

This medallet is not recorded by Laurence Brown in the British Historical Medals volume 2, but a piece that shares this obverse is as 2755 in bronze gilt which carries a reverse for a London Industrial Exhibition of 1862.
