George III (1760-1820), gold proof Third Guinea, 1813, final third type, second laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA., rev. large crown, date below, legend surrounding commencing top, * BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR, weight 2.79g (Schneider -; WR 140 R6; Bull EGC 882; cf.MCE 462; S.3740). Attractively toned with full underlying brilliance, a superb example with nice cameo effect, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as PF65 Cameo, the finest graded, with a fantastic provenance, and the true proofs of the third guinea of the highest rarity.

NGC Certification 2119615-014 - as of August 2023 this coin is the finest graded and top of the population at NGC.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "George the Third by the Grace of God", and on the reverse as "King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith."

The proofs of the final Third Guinea must have been produced in extremely limited numbers for very important persons, along with examples of the Military Guinea and Half-Guinea, they do not come up for sale very often at all and this is the first time we have had the proof of the Third Guinea of Seven Shillings face value ever at Sovereign Rarities.

Ex L. A. Larsen, Glendining, 1st November 1972, lot 365.
