George III 1788 Guinea, second year of the Spade type

George III (1760-1820),gold Guinea, 1788, fifth laureate head right, legend GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA.rev.crowned quartered spade shaped shield of arms, date at bottom, legend commences lower left, M.B.F.ET.H. REX. F.D.B. ET.L.D.S.R.I.A.T ET.E., weight 8.39g (Schneider -; Bull EGC 715 dies I/5; MCE 392; Farey 1270; S.3729).Toned with a few light surface marks, a bold extremely fine and pleasing.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George the Third by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse in abbreviated Latin which if in shown in full reads "Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brun et Lunebergen-sis Dux, Sacri Romani Imperii Archi-Thesaurius et Elector" and translates as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."

The total gold output for the calendar year of 1788 the second year of the spade type guinea was £3,664,175 being the highest output for the type and fifth highest of the denomination in this reign.
