George III 1776 pattern Third-Guinea, Year of American war of Independence
George III (1760-1820), gold Pattern Third Guinea of Seven Shillings, 1776, laureate head right, legend surrounding, GEORGIVS. III. DEI. GRATIA., rev. slightly off centre from en Medaille, crowned lion standing left on large crown with caul, date either side at top, legend surrounding, MAG. BRI. FR. ET. HIB. REX., edge plain, weight 2.45g (WR 137 R3; EGC 884 R2; Douglas-Morris 78; Montagu 552; Murdoch 169/170; Nobleman 21). Toned with a red hue, with underlying proof brilliance, with a myriad of surface marks and hairline scratches, with usual raised die flaws, otherwise extremely fine.
The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George the Third by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" a departure from the much longer abbreviated titles seen on the regular guinea series coinage of this time.
