Elizabeth I (1558-1603), fine gold Quarter Angel of Halfcrown value, fifth issue (1578-82), St Michael and dragon right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding on both sides, initial mark Greek cross (1578-79), ELIZABETH: D. G: ANG FRANCIE, rev. ship sailing right, large quartered shield at centre, E and rose above with cross, ET HIBERNIE. REGINA. FIDEI., weight 1.23g (SCH -; N.1993; S.2528). Weakly struck at centre both sides, legends toned and clear, a bold fine to about very fine and rare mint mark, no example present in the Schneider collection.

The abbreviated Latin legend should be read across both sides as one sentence and translates as "Elizabeth by the Grace of God, Queen of the faith of England, France and Ireland."

Accompanied by an NGC label from when this coin used to be slabbed as VF35 NGC 4492548-003.

The Greek cross mint mark was in use from the 1st October 1578 until the 17th May 1580 and a total of £20,261 worth of fine gold Angels, Half-Angels and Quarter-Angels were struck. This is the fifth smallest output total for the fine gold currency issues of the reign.
