Charles II (1660-85), gold Half-Guinea, 1684, fourth laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, four interlinked Cs at centre, date either side of top crown, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX., weight 4.15g (Schneider 450; Bull EGC 308; MCE 114; S.3348). Toned with flecks and surface marks, has been graded and slabbed by NGC as AU58, currently the finest graded.

NGC Certification 2130740-039 - We note as of June 2023 this coin is the finest of four graded by NGC and beats the one solo piece at PCGS by four grades.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

The total gold output for the calendar year 1684 amounted to £284,488 worth of Five Guineas, Two Guineas, Guineas and Half-Guineas, the second smallest output of this reign after 1663.
