Charles I gold Crown, mint mark heart ex Beresford-Jones Collection

Charles I (1625-49), gold Crown of Five Shillings, Tower Mint, group B, second crowned bust in ruff left, bust variety 3, value behind, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark heart (1629-30) both sides, CAROLVS D'. G' MA. BR FR'. ET. HI'. REX, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, crown type 3, beaded circles and legend surrounding, CVLTORES. SVI. DEVS. PROTEGIT, 2.24g (Schneider 235; cf.Brooker 198; N.2182; S.2712). Toned, spot of red wax deposit in obverse legend, a bold very fine, a pleasing coin with a good provenance.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on obverse "Charles by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," and on the reverse "God protects his worshippers." These gold coins are struck in 22 carat "crown" gold.
