The City of Leicester is situated on the River Soar a tributary from the Trent and is some 30 miles north west of Northampton. A See was established there from 737 and it later was the centre of an independent Viking army circa 877 and became one of the Five Boroughs. In 918 Aethelflaed the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great and Lady of the Mercians gained possession of Leicester without fighting with most of the local army submitting to her. Later in 940 the army of Anlaf Guthfrithson met with the army of Eadmund. Subsequently the Archbishops of Canterbury and York arranged a treaty giving territory including Leicester to Anlaf.
