It was after the Battle of Granicus that the Persians surrendered their provincial capital Sardes (in modern day western Turkey) in the Satrapy of Lydia. The conquest is highly significant for numismatics as Sardes had been the prolific mint for Persian Sigloi and Darics, and the existing mint was immediately re-employed with producing coinage for Alexander instead. It was Alexander's first mint in Asia.
