Kingdom of Macedon, Alexander III, The Great (336-323 B.C.), Silver Tetradrachm. Mint of Memphis, lifetime issue, struck c. 332-323 B.C. Head of young Herakles facing right, wearing a lion's skin headdress, rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus enthroned left, holding and eagle and a sceptre, a rose on left, ΔIO below throne, 16.72g., 12h (Price 3971 var.; Müller 124 var.). A very rare variety not recorded by Price, the ΔIO on the reverse all contained within the legs of the throne, boldly struck on a broad flan, a few light marks, nearly extremely fine.
