Charles I Pattern Halfgroat by Briot

Charles I (1625-49), silver pattern Halfgroat, by Nicholas Briot, bare head bust in ruff right, linear inner and beaded outer border with legend surrounding, initial mark lozenge, .CAR. D: G. MAG. BRIT. FRAN. ET. HI. R, rev. crowned pair of interlinked Cs, .B. below for Briot, legend with borders surrounding, FIDEI. DEFENSOR. weight 1.45g (Brooker 1255; N.2687; S.2856A). Lightly tooled in the fields as seen on most of these patterns, attractively toned, good very fine and scarce.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland." and on the reverse as "Defender of the Faith."
